Claude Gives Better Answers When You Give Better Instructions

Claude Gives Better Answers When You Give Better Instructions

The difference between an answer you delete and an answer you ship is often not a different model. It is a better instruction.

The model can only work with the brief you give it. When the request is vague, it fills the gaps with guesses. When the request includes the reason, audience, constraints, and an example of good, the answer has somewhere useful to go.

Tell Claude Why, Not Just What

“Summarize this report” leaves nearly everything to chance. “Summarize this report for a board meeting, keep it to four minutes, and focus on whether we are on budget” gives the work a purpose.

That small addition tells Claude who is reading, how much time they have, and what they care about. Same document. Different outcome.

Specificity is not being bossy. It is giving the work a definition of done.

Show the Shape of a Good Answer

If tone or structure matters, show an example instead of trying to describe it with a dozen adjectives. Put the important context before the request. Ask Claude to surface a question when a missing fact would change the answer.

Better instructions do not need to be long. They need to remove the guesses that would otherwise make the work generic. Start with the next request you would normally type in six words. Add the reason it matters, who it is for, and what a useful result looks like.
