Claude can now drag files, open apps, and click through your desktop. Hands completely off the keyboard. This is computer use, and it's the feature that makes people either very excited or very nervous (correct answers: both).

What Makes It Different

Computer use is not the Chrome extension. The Chrome extension works inside your browser. Computer use works outside it, on your actual desktop. Claude can access files, open applications, drag things between windows. The whole machine.

I tested it by asking Claude to find a video file on my desktop and drop it into my video editor. It opened the editor, found the file, and imported it. No touch from me. (I just sat there supervising like a manager who doesn't know what to do with his hands anymore.)

The Honest Take

It's slow. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Connectors are faster and more reliable. The Chrome extension handles most browser stuff better. Computer use is the backup option.

But here's the thing about backup options: when you need them, nothing else works. For tasks where Claude has to interact with desktop apps that have no API, no connector, and no web version, this is your only option. Legacy software. Niche desktop tools. That weird app your industry has been running since 2011.

Connectors first. Chrome extension second. Computer use when nothing else can reach it.

And it's getting better fast. The trajectory matters more than the current state. Six months ago this didn't exist at all. Just don't expect it to be instant yet.
