Why Claude Forgets Mid-Conversation (And How to Stop It)

Why Claude Forgets Mid-Conversation (And How to Stop It)

Ever had Claude forget something you said 20 minutes ago? That's not a bug. It's the context window.

Here's the 30-second version:

Think of It Like a Desk

Everything Claude can see right now sits on that desk. Your CLAUDE.md, your memory files, every message back and forth, any documents you uploaded, tool outputs. All of it.

Right now Claude has a 1 million token context window. That sounds huge. It fills up faster than you think. (Like a garage. You swear it's massive until the day you can't park in it.)

When it overflows, Claude has to compress. It pushes out older, less relevant stuff to make room. That's the exact moment it "forgets" the thing you said earlier.

The Fix Is Simple

Keep conversations focused. Start new threads for new tasks instead of cramming everything into one marathon chat. And put the important stuff in your CLAUDE.md or memory, because those get loaded first, every time.

The critical context never gets pushed off the desk if it's bolted to the desk.

This is part 5 of the 20-part Cowork series. Catch all 20 concepts in the full guide.

If your current conversation is 200 messages deep, do yourself a favor. Close it and start fresh.
