Claude Cowork: Give It the Goal, Not the Steps

You don't need Claude to explain how to build the quarterly deck. You need it to build the deck.

That's the gap between chatting with an AI and handing it the work. Chat is good at telling you how you might approach something. It stays in the conversation. Cowork is built for the moment after the conversation, when you're done discussing and ready to point Claude at the actual material.

Point It at the Work, Not the Steps

Cowork is for multi-step knowledge work, the kind where you'd normally narrate every tiny action to get a useful result. Instead, you choose the folders, files, and connected tools Claude can access, then you give it a goal.

Take a quarterly review. You could point cowork at your campaign exports, your sales notes, last quarter's deck, and the folder holding your brand template. Then ask it to identify the important changes, calculate the relevant comparisons, draft the narrative, and assemble a first version of the presentation.

That's a different relationship than chat. Chat tells you how you might build the deck. Cowork works across the material itself and hands you something to review.

Access is what makes the work possible, and it's what makes the risk real.

Access Is the Point and the Risk

Giving an AI access to your work is useful for the exact same reason it creates risk. It has access to your work. That's not a footnote, it's the whole trade.

Pay attention to permissions before you hand anything off. Review consequential actions rather than assuming the first pass is the final one. And resist the urge to connect every folder you've touched since 2009 (cowork works better narrow than it does exhaustive).

The words you choose when you set it up matter more here than in a chat window, because you're not just describing intent, you're granting reach.

Cowork reduces assembly. It doesn't remove judgment. The draft it hands back is a first version, not a final one, and treating it as anything else is where the risk actually lives.
