Claude Cowork Isn't Chat. Stop Using It Like Chat

Most people open Claude Cowork, ask it something, get an answer, copy it, paste it somewhere else, and call it a day.

That's chat behavior. And Cowork isn't chat.

The whole point of Cowork is that it lives inside your actual project. Your files, your instructions, your tools, all in one place instead of scattered across ten open tabs. You're not supposed to be the one ferrying information back and forth like some kind of unpaid intern.

Give It a Goal, Not a Question

Here's the shift. Instead of asking a question and copying the answer, give it a goal.

Organize this research. Create the documents. Update my project files. Tell me what still needs attention.

That's not a prompt, that's a job description. And Cowork can actually go do the job, because it has access to the files and tools that make the job possible in the first place. It's not explaining how you could organize your research. It's organizing it.

Chat gives you answers. Cowork gives you finished work.

That one distinction changes how you should be using this thing entirely. If you're still copy-pasting between a chat window and your actual documents, you're doing double the work for half the result.

Stop Babysitting the Middle Step

The habit to break is the copy-paste loop. It feels productive because you're doing something with your hands, but it's just you manually gluing two tools together that were never meant to be separate.

Give Cowork the goal. Let it touch the files. Check its work instead of assembling it yourself.
