Claude Opus 5: The Upgrades Nobody's Talking About

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5, and everyone is going to talk about the context window and the pricing. Skip that. The real story is smaller and weirder.
Claude now decides when to think. Not you. It. Adaptive thinking is on by default, which means Opus 5 is choosing, in real time, whether to answer fast, reason deeply, call a tool, or hand the job off to another agent entirely. You used to be the one deciding how much horsepower a question deserved. Now the model makes that call for you.
That is not a small shift. That is Claude quietly grabbing the steering wheel on cost and speed, two things you used to control.
Here is what else changed, fast:
- Smaller prompts now qualify for caching, which can cut repeat costs
- Automatic model fallbacks keep a workflow moving even after a refusal
- Claude can gain or lose tools mid-conversation, not just at the start
- It coordinates teams of specialized sub-agents more effectively
- It stays focused longer on complicated, multi-step projects
On top of that, effort controls give you a dial between speed, cost, and intelligence. Spreadsheet and presentation editing improved. Visual understanding and front-end development got better too. And Opus 5 now tests, reviews, and corrects more of its own work before handing it back to you.
That last one sounds great until you think about what it actually means.
More Verification Isn't Free
Claude checking its own homework is a feature. It is also more thinking, which is more tokens, which is more time, which is more cost. Nobody advertises that part on the release page.
Every upgrade on this list points the same direction: Opus 5 does more without asking. More reasoning, more delegation, more self-correction. That is powerful when it goes right. It is also a model quietly deciding, on your dime, how much effort a task deserves.
The model deciding how hard to think for you is not the same as the model thinking better.
What To Actually Test
Don't take the release notes at face value. Run something you already know the cost and time baseline for, and watch what Opus 5 does differently. Does it think longer than it needs to? Does it delegate to sub-agents when a single pass would've worked? That's where the real answer lives, not in a changelog.
