Excel Without Typing a Single Formula

I hate writing Excel formulas. Always have. The syntax feels like it was designed by someone who actively dislikes me personally (VLOOKUP, I am looking at you).

So I stopped writing them.

From a pile of receipts to a real spreadsheet

I dropped a folder of receipts into Claude and gave it one sentence: turn these into a profit and loss statement.

It made a real Excel file. Not a screenshot of a spreadsheet, not a table pasted into chat. An actual xlsx with categories, totals, a chart, and formulas that genuinely work when you click into the cells. I double-clicked, Excel opened, and there it was. Done.

You do not need to know the formula. You need to know what you want the spreadsheet to say.

The skill that became obsolete

For years, "good with Excel" meant you had memorized a pile of function syntax. That was the gatekeeping skill. If you could not recall the exact arguments for INDEX MATCH, you were stuck.

That skill just quietly became optional. The valuable part was never typing SUM. It was knowing what numbers mattered and how you wanted them arranged. The AI handles the typing. You handle the thinking.

If you hate Excel, stop fighting the formula bar. Describe what you want and let the machine build it.
