Fix Claude Cowork in 30 Seconds

Fix Claude Cowork in 30 Seconds

If your Cowork output feels generic, it's not the tool's fault and it's not yours either. It's that Cowork starts every session knowing nothing about you. No name, no style, no tools. Of course the results are bland.

There's one setting that fixes it, and it takes about 30 seconds.

The setting and what to put in it

Open Claude Desktop, go to Settings, then Cowork, then Edit Global Instructions. Drop in three things. Your ROLE, so Claude knows who it's working for. Your OUTPUT PREFERENCES, like "always give me complete drafts, plain English, no filler." And your TOOLS, the apps you actually use day to day, like Notion, Gmail, and Calendar.

That's it. A few lines. Save it and forget it.

Cowork without Global Instructions is a brilliant assistant who forgot your name. Tell it once.

Why this small thing has big effects

Context is what separates generic output from output that sounds like you wanted it. Without it, Claude guesses, and the guess is always the bland average. With it, every single session starts already pointed in your direction.

Set it one time and never touch it again. (The funniest part is how many people grind on prompt phrasing for weeks while skipping the one box that would have fixed everything in half a minute.)

Go fill in your Global Instructions right now. Your next session is already going to be better, and so is every one after it.
