Never Let Your AI Delete Anything

Here is a fun fact that should make you sit up: AI agents can delete your files. Move them. Overwrite them. Permanently, in some cases, with no undo and no ceremony.
And they will do it the instant a bad prompt tells them to. Ask me how I know.
One setting stands between you and a bad day
There is a setting. Flip it. Ask before acting. That is the whole defense and it costs you 30 seconds.
With it on, every time the agent wants to delete, move, or overwrite something, it stops and asks you first. It does not get to make the irreversible call on its own. You become the second pair of eyes on every destructive action, which is exactly where a human should be.
An AI that can delete files without asking is not a tool. It is a liability with a friendly chat window.
It actually saved me
This is not theoretical paranoia. Last week I gave a bad prompt, the agent went to do something destructive, and the "ask first" setting caught it before it touched a client file. I said no. Crisis averted, dignity intact.
Without that prompt, the file would have been gone, and I would be writing a very different post right now (the kind with an apology in it).
Go turn on "ask before acting" right now. Future you will be grateful.
