The Cowork Feature Nobody Is Using Right

There's a feature in Cowork that quietly does the most work, and almost nobody bothers to set it up. Which is wild, because it's the thing that turns "helpful AI" into "your AI."

Helpful vs. yours

Out of the box, Cowork is genuinely helpful. It'll answer, draft, and build with the best of them. But helpful is generic. Helpful is the same for you as it is for a stranger.

Custom skills are how you teach it your way of doing things. Your format. Your steps. Your standards for what "done" looks like. Once a skill knows that, Claude stops giving you the default answer and starts giving you your answer.

Helpful is what the AI does for everyone. Skills are what it does for you.

Why most people sleep on it

Here's the honest reason custom skills get ignored: setting one up feels like work, and the default is good enough to be comfortable. So people stay in the generic lane and never feel what they're missing.

That's the trap. The payoff comes later, every single time you use it. You teach the skill once, and from then on Claude nails the thing you'd otherwise have to spell out over and over. (It's the gym membership of AI features. The value is real, but only if you actually show up.)

A skill is a small upfront cost for a permanent upgrade. The people getting absurd value out of Cowork aren't smarter. They just built the skills.
