People keep asking me to declare a winner between ChatGPT Agent and Claude Cowork, like it is a boxing match and one of them has to leave on a stretcher.

Honest answer: they are different tools. Apples and power drills. Let me explain.

Where each one actually lives

ChatGPT Agent runs on a cloud computer. That means it cannot see your files. It cannot touch your real browser. It lives in a sandbox somewhere on a server, doing its thing in a clean room that has none of your actual stuff in it.

Claude Cowork runs on your Mac. It uses your actual browser profile, with your logins already there. It touches your actual files, the real ones on your real machine. It works where your work already is.

The question is not which agent is smarter. It is which one is standing in the room where your work lives.

Pick by the job, not the brand

For real work, local wins. When the task involves your files, your accounts, your messy folder of client documents, you want the agent that can actually reach them. Cloud cannot reach into your laptop, and that is the whole ballgame for a lot of jobs.

For web tasks, cloud is fine. If the work lives entirely on the internet (research, filling out a form, poking around a site), it does not matter that the agent is in a sandbox. The web is in the sandbox too.

Stop asking which is better. Ask which is standing where your work is.
