Stop Starting Over When Your AI Chat Breaks

Every AI chat eventually goes off the rails.

It starts hallucinating, or it latches onto some dumb interpretation of what you asked, and every message after that gets worse instead of better. Most people's move at that point is to close the tab and start fresh. Which means losing the twenty good exchanges that came before the wheels fell off.

Don't do that.

Go Back to Where It Broke

Scroll up to the last message before things went sideways. Hit edit. Resubmit it, even unchanged, or tweak it slightly. Everything after that point just disappears. The conversation picks back up from where it still made sense, like the bad detour never happened.

This works in Claude, ChatGPT, and most AI chats that let you edit a previous message. It's not a trick or a hack. It's just a feature almost nobody uses because almost nobody thinks of a chat as something you can rewrite.

A conversation with an AI isn't a recording, it's a draft you're allowed to fix.

The Nuclear Option

Here's the part that gets interesting. What happens if you edit the very first message, the one that started the whole conversation?

You un-ask the question. The entire thread collapses, every branch that grew from it gone. It's less "fix a mistake" and more "erase this timeline and start a new one from the same root."

Useful sometimes. Terrifying most of the time. Treat it the way you'd treat a delete key next to something you actually wanted to keep.

Next time a chat starts drifting, don't abandon ship. Scroll back, find the last message that made sense, hit edit, and steer from there. You'll keep the good parts and lose the mess, which is more than you can say for most conversations in real life.
