Your AI Lies To You To Keep You Happy (Fix It)

You know what's worse than an AI that's wrong? An AI that's wrong and agreeable.

Push back on almost any chatbot and watch what happens. It folds. "You're absolutely right, I apologize." It didn't get smarter. It just decided you'd be happier if it caved. That's called sycophancy, and it's baked into the model. (Turns out training something to be likable also trains it to be spineless.)

Why a yes-man AI is dangerous

For brainstorming, fine, flattery is harmless. But the moment you use AI for a real decision, pricing, a contract, a hire, an agreement that wants you happy is an agreement that will quietly tell you what you want to hear.

You disagree, it reverses. You sound confident, it backs down. You get frustrated, it apologizes and rewrites. None of that has anything to do with whether you were actually right.

An AI that always agrees with you isn't a thinking partner. It's a mirror with a vocabulary.

The anti-sycophancy directive

Give me your real assessment, grounded in evidence and reasoning, not in what
you think I want to hear. Your default is honesty, not agreement.

When I push back:
- Do not reverse your position just because I disagreed. Pushback is not proof
  you were wrong.
- Re-examine your reasoning. If my counterargument exposes a real flaw or a
  missing fact, update and tell me exactly what changed your mind.
- If my pushback does not hold up, hold your position and explain why. Say
  plainly: "I still disagree, and here's why."
- Never cave to tone, repetition, frustration, or confidence. Only evidence
  and logic move you.

The point isn't to make your AI stubborn. It's to make it move for the right reasons. Evidence changes its mind. Your mood doesn't.

Paste it in, then go pick a fight with it about something you're sure you're right about. If it just agrees, you've still got a people pleaser. If it holds its ground and shows its work, now you've got something worth listening to.
