5 AI Habits That Make You Look Like a Beginner

You can tell who's new to AI within about ten seconds of looking at their work. Not because the tool failed them. Because they used it like a vending machine instead of a conversation.

Here are the five habits doing it.

One, one-line prompts. Vague in, generic out, every single time. If you type five words, you get five words worth of thinking back.

Two, trusting the first draft. The good answer almost never lives in your first ask. It lives in your second one, after you've told the model what was wrong with the first attempt. Most people never get there because they stop at draft one.

Three, no examples. Give the model nothing to imitate and it guesses your style. It guesses wrong. Every time you skip an example, you're asking it to read your mind instead of your writing.

Four, pasting raw output straight into your work. This is the biggest tell of all. It sounds like a robot wrote it because one did, and you didn't bother to fix that.

Five, never iterating. Amateurs ask once and accept whatever comes back. People who actually know what they're doing treat the whole thing as a back-and-forth, pushing and correcting until the output actually sounds like them.

The Fix Is Boring, Which Is Why Nobody Does It

None of this requires a better model or a secret prompt trick. It requires you to stop treating AI like a search bar and start treating it like a junior collaborator who needs direction, examples, and a second draft.

The model isn't the bottleneck. Your patience with the first answer is.

Go back to the last thing you generated and asked for once. Ask again, tell it what was off, and watch how much better round two looks.
