Your Prompt Tricks Are Probably Backfiring

Everyone hoards prompt tricks like they're magic spells. "You are an expert." "Think step by step." Force it into JSON. Add five examples for good measure.

Nobody tells you that half of these make your output worse. You just keep stacking them because more feels safer.

A prompt isn't a spell. It's a spec you hand to a machine that's guessing what you want. Every extra word you throw in either sharpens that guess or buries it. There's no in between.

The Fix Is Matching, Not Stacking

I stopped collecting tricks and built a skill that matches every technique to the exact failure it's meant to fix. Nothing gets added just because it sounds thorough.

Bad voice coming out? Add a persona. That's what personas are for.

Wrong format? Show two examples. Not ten, two.

Multi-step math or logic? Let the model reason it out instead of jamming in instructions that fight each other.

Everything else gets cut. Not softened, not reworded. Cut.

A prompt that works is smaller than the one you started with, not bigger.

I describe what I want in plain English now, and the skill hands back a professional-grade prompt along with the reason for every single piece that's in there. If it can't justify a line, the line doesn't survive.

The output is smaller, sharper, and it actually works better than the bloated version I used to write by hand.

Go look at the last prompt you copy-pasted from some "50 ChatGPT hacks" listicle. Count how many lines in there are doing nothing except making you feel like you tried hard. Then cut them and see what happens.
