One Big AI Prompt Should Be Three Small Ones

Most people write one giant prompt and stuff everything into it. The context. The rules. The task. The format. The edge cases. All of it, in one breathless block of text.

Then they wonder why the output is mush. (The output is mush because you asked for mush, but politely.)

One prompt asking for everything gets you nothing

When you ask an AI to plan, execute, and quality-check all in a single shot, it does all three badly. It is like asking one person to cook, serve, and wash up at the same time. Something gets dropped, and usually it is the plate.

Quality goes down. Way down. Not because the model is weak, but because you gave it three jobs and one slot to do them in.

Splitting your prompt is not extra work. It is the difference between an AI that guesses and an AI that thinks.

Plan, do, check

Split it into three. One prompt plans the work. One prompt does the work. One prompt checks the work. Then you chain them, feeding the output of each into the next.

The planning prompt gets to actually think about approach before any work happens. The doing prompt gets a clean plan to execute instead of figuring it out on the fly. The checking prompt gets fresh eyes on the result instead of grading its own homework (which, shocker, AI is terrible at).

Same job. Three times better output. Stop writing one monster prompt and start writing three lean ones.
