Only Use Canvas For This

Most people open ChatGPT Canvas, poke at it for thirty seconds, and decide it is a gimmick. They are half right. Canvas is useless for most of what they try to do with it. (Quick chat answers do not belong in a document editor. Shocking.)

But there is one job where Canvas is the best tool in the whole app.

Use Canvas for iterating on one long thing

Canvas earns its keep when you are working a single document over many passes. A blog post. A long email. A chunk of code you keep tweaking. The kind of thing where you want to edit in place instead of regenerating the whole answer every time.

Canvas is not a chat replacement. It is an editing surface for the one piece you are revising over and over.

In normal chat, every edit means a fresh wall of text and you hunting for what changed. In Canvas, the document stays put and you change pieces of it. You can highlight a paragraph and tell it to fix just that part. That is the magic.

Stop using it for everything else

Quick questions, brainstorming, anything throwaway. Just use the chat. Opening Canvas for those is like booting up Photoshop to crop one screenshot.

One document, many revisions. That is the Canvas sweet spot. Use it there and ignore it everywhere else.
