Your Prompts Aren't Rude, They're Just Vague

You don't have a politeness problem. You have a specificity problem.

I keep seeing people apologize to their AI like it's going to remember the slight. "Hey, hope you're well, could you maybe possibly help me with..." Stop. It's a tool, not your coworker who's still mad about the group project. Drop the small talk and be direct.

Here's what actually moves the needle.

Give it a role. Don't ask a generic AI to review your contract, that's like asking a random person on the street. Tell it it's a contracts attorney with 15 years of experience. Name the job, set the lens, define the expertise. Now it answers like a pro instead of a search engine having a stroke.

State the real goal. "Write about marketing" isn't a goal, it's a shrug. Name the audience, name the outcome, define what success looks like. Vague goals get vague answers, every single time.

Add constraints. Length, format, the stuff you don't want in there. People treat constraints like handcuffs. They're not. They're the steering wheel. Without them you're just along for whatever ride the model feels like taking you on.

Show one example. One sample of what good looks like kills more guessing than a paragraph of instructions ever will. Show, don't explain.

Make it ask first. Tell it to find the missing info and clarify its assumptions before it starts working. Let it interview you like it's the one hiring.

It was never about being polite. It's about being specific.

The Part Nobody Wants to Hear

Tell it what to avoid and you get better output on the first try. That's it. That's the whole secret, and it's been sitting there the entire time, wearing a name tag.

Most people skip all six steps and then blame the model. The model didn't fail you. Your prompt was a text message to your ex at 2am, all vibes, no information.
