Stop Prompting AI. Start Managing It Like Staff

You don't have a prompting problem. You have a managing problem.

Most people fire off a one-line order at AI and then act shocked when it comes back wrong. You'd never do that to an actual employee. Hand someone vague instructions, walk away, come back mad they didn't read your mind. That's insane management. It's also exactly what you're doing every time you type three words into a chat box and hit enter.

The people getting incredible output from AI aren't better at prompting. They're better at managing. Here's the whole move, start to finish.

The 5-Step Process

One, onboard it. Share the background, explain the goal, show it a past example. Two minutes, tops.

Two, set the deliverable. Define the output, pick the format, set the constraints upfront. Don't make it guess what "good" looks like.

Three, let it ask. Tell it to ask you questions before it writes a single word. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that catches the gaps in your own thinking, not just the AI's.

Four, review and redirect. Keep what works, flag the weak spots, send it back for a revision. Like you would with anyone on your team.

Five, build a repeatable process. Save the prompt, reuse the workflow, standardize the handoff. Now you never start from scratch again.

Ten minutes of managing beats an hour of fixing AI slop.

Treat It Like Staff, Not a Slot Machine

A vending machine gives you what you put in, minus your money. AI isn't that. It's closer to a new hire on day one, capable, fast, completely clueless about your context until you give it some.

The onboarding step is the one everybody skips because it feels slow. It's two minutes. Compare that to the hour you'll spend rewriting a document that missed the point because you never told it the point.

Step three is the sleeper. Letting AI ask questions before it produces anything forces you to actually clarify what you want, which half the time you hadn't fully worked out yourself.

Go build one repeatable process this week. Pick the task you redo most often, run it through all five steps once, save the prompt. Next time it takes ten seconds instead of ten minutes.
