The One Line That Keeps AI From Breaking Your Stuff

The One Line That Keeps AI From Breaking Your Stuff

You know what's worse than an AI that won't do anything? An AI that does everything, instantly, including the part you didn't want.

I add one sentence to every single prompt that touches my files. One. And it has saved me more times than I'm comfortable admitting.

Here's the line

"Confirm with me before deleting, moving, or overwriting anything."

That's it. That's the whole trick. (You were expecting a 12-step framework. Sorry.)

Drop that into any prompt where the AI has its hands on real files. Now when Claude is about to do something permanent, it stops. It asks. It waits for you to say yes before it nukes anything.

Permanent actions deserve a permission check. Everything else can run free.

Why one sentence beats good intentions

The problem with AI on your files isn't that it's malicious. It's that it's confident and fast. It'll decide the cleanest path forward is to overwrite that file, and it'll be ninety percent right and ten percent catastrophic.

This line flips the default. Instead of "act first, apologize never," it becomes "check first, then act." You're inserting a speed bump exactly where you want one and nowhere else.

I've had it catch mistakes three times this month. Three saves from typing eleven words. That's the best return on effort in my entire workflow.

Save this one. Then actually use it, unlike the other 400 things you've saved.
